Progress Underway on Laveen Development

It’s been a while since dirt moved on a commercial development in Laveen. But that changed last month when construction began on the second phase of the L.A. Fitness Center at 51st Avenue and Baseline Road.

According to the developer, Michael Moreines of Terrazona, LLC, the two pads underway along Baseline Road will house Discount Tire and Pet Club, a family-owned pet business based in Mesa. Both tenants should be open and operating within about five months.

Pet Club owner Weston Smith says his company specializes in providing premium pet foods at discount prices, as well as carrying all the pet supply lines found at PetSmart and Petco. The company has 27 stores in Arizona and Colorado.

“We’ve been looking over that area (Laveen) for a long time,” Smith added. “Actually, we signed this lease about a year ago. We knew there was an opportunity with customers not getting their needs met and that’s why we’re going in over there.”

The closest current Pet Club location is in Tolleson.

As for Discount Tire, Vice President Mark Rogers says the new location is designed to decrease spacing between stores. The closest current store to the new location is near Central Avenue and Baseline Road.

“We will now have a convenient location for those customers who have never done business with us or for our Discount Tire customers who have to drive so far to get their tires serviced,” he said. “We are very excited to be in the town of Laveen and are looking forward to doing business in Laveen.”

Moreines couldn’t provide names of additional tenants planned for the development because they aren’t officially signed. However, he did say residents could expect to see a national coffee user, as well as tenants for yogurt and pizza businesses. A cell phone company remains a possibility.

Representatives from a national auto company are also looking at one of the future pads. Two additional pads – which would be part of a third construction phase – are being held for a bank and fast food restaurant.

“The is going to be an ongoing corner for continuous construction, which is good because it will give us all something to look forward to every few months,” Moreines said.
