SMCC to Host Bioscience Camp for HS Students

Applications are now being accepted for the fifth annual installment of South Mountain
Community College’s popular Bioscience Summer Camp for high school students,
May 31 through June 30, at the college’s main campus.
Sponsored by SMCC and AZ Tech Prep, the camp, intended for high school juniors and
seniors, includes classroom and lab work in the fields of bioscience and genetic research, as
well as field trips to TGen and ASU’s Biodesign Institutes. Participating students may also
earn college credits for university transfer.
Students at the five-week camp will participate in a variety of bioscience activities and
experiments, including:

  • Fusing two different species of plants to create a hybrid of the two species
  • Inserting a jellyfish gene into a bacteria, making it glow
  • Testing food for genetic modification
  • Extracting their own DNA and creating a DNA necklace

The five week camp begins May 31, and takes place Mondays through Thursday after-
noons from 1:00 to 4:55 p.m. , concluding on Thursday, June 30.
The SMCC Bioscience Camp takes place at the South Mountain Community College main
campus, located at 7050 S. 24th Street in Phoenix, just north of Baseline Road.
Students accepted into the program will receive a stipend that will cover all camp costs,
with the exception of a $30 non-refundable participation fee. Interested students can apply
