Gervin Students Participate in ‘Shopping’ Event

Students from the George Gervin Preparatory Academy recently participated in  “Shopping With A Kappa,” an event at a Phoenix-area Wal-Mart to pick up Christmas goodies for their families.

Shopping With A Kappa is a national outreach program for children sponsored by the Psi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Ron O’Neal, the national coordinator, was present for the Phoenix-area event that gave more than 20 students $100 Wal-Mart gift cards to spend at the 36th Avenue and Southern location right before Christmas.

“I believe everyone has an obligation to give back to their community with either time or money,” O’Neal said. “Time is done through volunteerism and money is achieved through donations. It is our duty put our resources and experience back into our youth and communities for a prosperous future.”

Students were paired with a Kappa volunteers and had time to fill their shopping carts – or their sponsor’s arms – with gifts for family and friends.

In its second year, George Gervin Preparatory Academy aspires to create an elite learning community that eliminates academic barriers while enveloping the students, parents and faculty in an atmosphere of academic creativity and motivation that prepares students for success today and into the future.

Georg Gervin Preparatory Academy is located at 2801 E. Southern Avenue in Phoenix. Contact the school at 602-296-7936.
