Amazon Traffic Delays at 51st and Buckeye
Drivers should allow additional time to travel from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. weekdays now through the holiday season in the area bounded by 51st to 47th avenues and Buckeye Road south to Mohave Street.
Over the next few weeks, Amazon.com plans to hire about 2,000 seasonal employees who will work at the fulfillment center located at 4750 W. Mohave St. The increase in employees and delivery trucks in the area are expected to increase traffic significantly.
Employee traffic at the fulfillment center will enter from 49th Avenue, flow to either a designated onsite drop-off/pick-up area or to a main or auxiliary lot to park. All fulfillment center traffic will exit to 51st Avenue or W. Mohave Street.
To plan for the increased traffic Amazon will:
- Place electronic message boards on 51st Avenue and W. Buckeye Road to alert drivers who may want to take an alternate route.
- Amazon is working with an event management company to manage on-site parking lot traffic.
- Police will be on duty during peak traffic times to provide street traffic control as needed.
- The Street Transportation Department will monitor traffic flow patterns to adjust traffic signal timing as needed to reduce delays.
Drivers are encouraged to use caution and allow for additional travel time in the area through the holiday season.
