Celebrating Frida in July
Burton Barr Central Library, located at 1221 N. Central Ave., hosts “Celebrating Frida,” an exhibit of artwork inspired by Frida Kahlo and created by the Phoenix Fridas, July 5 – 28. The exhibit kicks off 6 – 8 p.m. Friday, July 5, with a free First Friday artist reception. Music will be performed by Maya Murillo and Carmen de Novais Guerrero.
The library will also host a series of free programs complementing the exhibit, including
Feliz Cumpleaños Frida Kahlo 1 – 4 p.m., Saturday, July 6 Crafts, live music and more – for all ages
“I Paint My Own Reality” 6 – 8 p.m., Thursday, July 11 Panel discussion with the Phoenix Fridas about how the artist has inspired their work and lives.
Frida Shrine Workshop with Crafty Chica Kathy Cano-Murillo (registration required) 1 – 4 p.m., Saturday, July 20 Create a Frida-inspired shrine. Ages 16 and older.
The Phoenix Fridas will offer a mercado of their work for sale as part of the activities on July 6 and 11. A portion of mercado sales will benefit the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library.
The Phoenix Fridas are local artists including Crafty Chica Kathy Cano-Murillo, Carmen Guerrero, Emily Costello, Anita Mabante Leach, Annalisa Rios, Monique Sanderson-Mata, Michele Delgado, Gloria Casillas-Martinez, Veronica Verdugo-Lornell and Diana Calderon.
