Laveen’s New Dipping Well
With 27 flavors of olive oil, 35 flavors of balsamic vinegar and four meat marinades, all available for tasting, who could resist making a beeline for the place?
And the recipes? How about brownies made with blood orange olive oil? Also sounding yummy is the chicken breast made with cranberry balsamic vinegar sauce and the Raspberry balsamic vinegar Neapolitan desert made with waffle cookies.
Only ones own imagination can limit what can be done to food with balsamic vinegar flavors like mango, black walnut, mandarin orange, green apple and many others. And where else can a person get bacon flavored olive oil or an exotic Moroccan flavor along with the regular Italian flavor?
This out-of-the-ordinary shop is in Laveen and is owned by Tangee and Cornel Wilkes who opened The Dipping Well about seven months ago.
Why Laveen? “Because we live there,” said Cornel.
So far business is good.
“We’re getting our feet more wet and we’ve had a positive response from the community and feeling better about the decision we’ve made,” he said. “Christmas was fantastic.”
They became interested in this type of business during a visit to Sedona when they walked into a little shop that offered olive oils and balsamic vinegars and were allowed to taste them.
“We just fell in love with the product,” said Tangee.
“We had been looking to do something, but we didn’t know what we were looking for, but if the right opportunity came along, we had been saving our pennies,” Cornel said.
They walked back into the store to ask how to get started in something similar.
“We did our homework, reading and gathering as much research as we could that would help us come to a decision,” she said.
Shortly thereafter they took the step or as Cornel puts it, “stepped blindly into the business.”
But, Tangee said, they felt good about it. That is not to say there have not been challenges.
“Who goes into business not expecting challenges? But we welcome the challenges and through time and patience, we will be successful,” Cornel said.
They came up with the name for their business because they offer tastes of their product.
“We thought it would fit the general concept of dipping your bread into balsamic vinegar or olive oil,” he said.
“We invite people come and taste. Free samples of everything are available to be tasted,” she said, “They can spend as much times as they have and stay for as long as they want to.”
“That is very important to us,” he said. “We have a nice environment of soft jazz in the background and we are friendly and open.”
Recent studies have revealed that olive oil is a very important component in a healthy diet.
“That is important to our customers too,” Tangee said. “That feature is a good thing to know.”
“We deal with a master blender. This is our private label,” he said. “I can humbly say The Dipping Well has the best products on the market.”
The couple likes to experiment with their products as well.
“I’m not a chef, but I like to cook. My husband likes to cook as well. We use our product and we love it and we like to share what we find out.”
Not only do they use the olive oils and balsamic vinegars in their recipes, they are loving the marinades.
“There is no limit to what can be done with these products,” he said,
The Dipping Well is open seven days – Monday through Wednesday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m., to 6 p.m.; and Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m,
