Green Mix: Healthy, Delicious, Affordable

Health has been, and continues to be, a very hot topic. Gyms and physical fitness programs are still as popular as ever. Coupled with quality of life concerns, food is now entering the forefront of healthier living. Schools are revising menus with a focus on nutritional needs. Eating habits that take wellness into consideration are seen as a crucial part of keeping health care costs lower. Even those who cannot imagine a meal without steak and potatoes are reconsidering.

The only problem with adopting a diet inclined toward health and fitness is finding something when on the go. Work constraints, time, location and cost can make heart-friendly dining difficult to find. The temptation to simply select fast food is too easy to pass up due two culprits: prevalence and convenience.

Offering a solution to the dilemma of healthier eating without out breaking the bank, Green Mix offers a solution–one filled with rich flavors.

If a salad-centered restaurant brings to mind non flavor combined with ice-cold lettuce, the philosophy behind Green Mix involves an added twist that breaks away from a formulaic approach to the subject.

Coming from a family deeply invested in restaurants, John So had considerable exposure to the business. He also had a vision, one for a different type of restaurant not present in the Valley. Having seen establishments in California and what they were doing, So decided that now was a good time to bring a new perspective culled from those experiences to South Mountain.

Part of the impetus for Green Mix came from direct need. Being an active person involved with sports regularly, So wanted to create a dining experience that would be suited for those with fitness as a priority. One of the first areas was how to adapt Chinese cuisine to health conscious cooking that would not compromise rich flavor.

With his cousin, Joe Lee, the two created a menu that reflects on their family background with a strong focus on healthier choices and new directions with the food. Pulling from contemporary ideas with older ones, along with a keen eye for visual presentation, what has emerged at Green Mix is a serious retake on salads that makes you reconsider every misconception you ever had about healthy eating.

The menu supports surprising ranges of salad options from orange sesame vinaigrette to cilantro lime barbeque dressing.  The choices of cheeses and other items like applewood smoked bacon to grilled ribeye steak means there is literally something for everyone. For vegetarians the options are rich, and for those that can’t give up meat, there are some compelling, rich flavors worth savoring.

On hand are ciabatta sandwiches, and each selection comes with a side tossed salad with the very nicely rendered orange sesame vinaigrette. The Greenmix Tuna sounds intriguing simply by reading the ingredient list. When you mix grilled tuna, tomato, jalapeno, red onion, cilantro, smoked gouda and a signature dressing, the list of ingredients sounds mouthwatering just reading it aloud–and it is when consumed.

A real standout is the flatbread salad. With barbeque shrimp, it is hard to believe when placed it this context however it is the kind of taste treat that is mesmerizing.

For about what you pay at a more generic establishment, you can have a filling, flavor-filled meal that will satisfy hunger without having to worry about your new healthy diet. Menu items range in the $7 to $9 range, which is amazing considering that you part with a lot more anywhere else in the Valley for something comparable.

Occupying  a  great location near the very developing 24th street and Baseline Road corner, where new business are springing up, including a new gym, Green Mix  is in a prime spot. Offering great food, super value and a vantage point to watch the world go by, South Mountain has gained a unique venue that is unlike anything else in the ever-expanding Valley of the Sun.
