Decorate on a Dime
Cathy Kanitz clearly believes the old saying that if one looks good, they feel good as well.
For Kanitz, though, the adage applies to one’s home as well. And she’s turned that belief into Design on a Dime, her Laveen-based business with a mission to make people feel good by making their house look good—without draining your bank account to do it.
“I like to help people to have a beautiful interior in their home without having to spend a lot of money,” said Kanitz, who launched her company one year ago after doing it as a hobby for friends, relatives and other acquaintances.
She said the three main categories she works with and are usually the most important to changing an interior is paint, furniture and window treatments. The secret is finding these items at a discount, Kanitz said, adding that she’s spent many years building a library of knowledge on where to find items such as discontinued fabrics and slightly used or blemished furniture that she’ll give new life by rebuilding and reupholstering the piece.
“You don’t have to spend much money at all,” said Kanitz, who added that the easiest way to transform a room is to paint it something other than white. She said most people love colors and know what they like, but when it comes time to put in on the walls of their own homes, they often balk.
Kanitz said she can do all the work for clients or can simply give do-it-yourself tips from her years of experience. She said if a client can show her what they want in a catalog or photo, she can most likely mirror the look or piece of furniture for a fraction of the retail cost.
“I just love to do this,” she said. “I love being able to add the ‘ahhhhh’ factor to the interior of home.”
And what’s Kanitz’ goal for Design on a Dime?
“I want to make all the homes in Laveen more beautiful,” she said.
And cheering everyone up at the same time.
