Phoenix Public Library Hosts ‘Cover to Cover’ Exhibit
Burton Barr Central Library will host an exhibit by Kris Sanford and Beata Wehr, titled “Cover to Cover,” through May 31 at the library’s @Central Gallery, 1221 N. Central Ave. The artists were selected to exhibit together because of their complementary use of the book form to explore memories. (High resolution images are available on the library’s website.)
In her series of photographs, Sanford uses a 1954 diary that belonged to a grandfather she never met as a way to explore memories contained in the text. For Sanford, photographs and diaries stand in as tangible objects that represent the fleeting experience of friendship, family and relationships.
A native of Warsaw, Poland, Wehr uses timelines, letters from the past and calendars to create artist’s books that explore the passage of time and its consequences for fragile bodies and minds. She explores the dialectic of how the past determines the present and how what is happening now influences thinking about the past.
