Roosevelt Schools Break Ground on Education Center

The Roosevelt School District, in collaboration with partners D.L. Withers and Orcutt/Winslow, recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new unique multipurpose facility designed to not only serve as the hub for the district’s Child Nutrition Department but also serve as an instructional resource to enhance and support Wellness and Nutrition Education within the school district. The design and purpose of the facility is to directly promote healthy lifestyles for the students and residents of the South Mountain community.
The five-acre site, located at 1030 E. Baseline Road, Phoenix, AZ. 85042, will house a a sustainable food distribution warehouse capable of purchasing highly nutritious foods in large volumes and serving Roosevelt schools efficiently and effectively. Along with its partners, Roosevelt has designed a unique full-service kitchen allowing the district to train staff in new cooking methods conducive to the changing requirements of child nutrition, drawing upon a group of chef volunteers from around the Phoenix area and across the country to assist in this effort.
Roosevelt’s instructional staff will now have a location designed to educate and teach children and parents how to work with healthy foods. The district will develop and implement a community school program, which will provide the Roosevelt children with a learning experience pertaining to health and well being that is infused with essential skills in math, science and reading.
In addition, the entire site will also be a living and edible landscape-learning lab that will demonstrate the unique work being done around wellness and nutritional education. The facility includes multiple gardens and greenhouses with natural, hydroponic and aqua-ponic habitats. The harvests from these sources will be cultivated by the children and staff for use in culinary experiences, nutritional analysis and business related lessons.
